What is your most memorable experience? I was in kindergarten and it was all over in the paper. How old were you? 6 What were you thinking about? President Kennedy was the head honcho…so he was like a hero Were you scared? When we were in school we would have to go in the hall and site by the wall with our head between
our knees just incase there was an attack. Was the war on the news a lot? All the time What was living like? for a while it was tense…but other than that… it wasn’t much different. THE STORY BEHIND THE BERLIN AIRLIFT After the war Germany was divided into three parts, The Allied part was controlled by the U.S. Great Britain
and France. The other part was controlled by the Soviet Union. The city of Berlin was located on the east side, or the soviet
side but was also divided into sections. West Berlin belonged to the Allies and East Berlin belonged to the Soviets. In 1948,
the Soviets tried to take the western half of Berlin by sort of blockading it. They cut off all in and out traffic which shut
down the business and was starving the people. President Truman reacted to this by simply flying goods into Western Berlin.
Soon after the blockade was lifted.
THE KOREAN WAR On June 25, 1950, the Cold War suddenly escalated. Within only a few days North Korea’s invasion
of South Korea brought on the United Nations “police action”. This caused immediate U.S. military and navy involvement.
At first this was thought to be an easy task and no one had guessed that this war would last 3 years. During the summer of 1950, the U.S. and other Nations fought vigorously to keep North Koreas fast paced army under control.
On and on went the fighting but with no one really gaining or loosing any territory. Finally, three years later, in 1953 Negotiations
ended and so did the fighting.

ordered troops to cease fire. The battle lasted 55 days. 3,000 French soldiers were killed, 8,000 were wounded. The Vietnamese
are much worse off with 8,000 dead and 12,000 wounded, but they still emerged from this epic battle triumphant. January 4, 1963 Last night at the hamlet of Ap Bac, Vietcong 514th Battalion and guerrilla forces ambushed the south Vietnamese
Army’s 7th division. The Vietcong put up an intense battle as they stood there ground against American machinery
and south Vietnamese soldiers. Approximately 400 south Vietnamese were killed or wounded, and 3 American advisors were slain. February 9, 1965 U.S. navy fighters and bombers are sent to attack military targets just inside North Vietnam under the command of president
Johnson. This is resulting from an attack on a U.S. helicopter base by NFL commandos, killing nine Americans and wounding
more than 70. January 10, 1996 Operation “CRIMP” has failed. The purpose was to capture Vietcong headquarters in the Saigon area. Yet after
deploying nearly 8,000 troops American forces failed to find any significant Vietcong bases. January 1969 “Peace with Honor” Promises new President Richard M. Nixon as he proposes a plan to withdraw half a million
U.S. troops from Vietnam while still trying to allow South Vietnam to survive. March 1973 Yesterday the last of the American combat soldiers were withdrawn from Vietnam, although U.S. advisors and marines who
are protecting U.S. installations are still there. For the U.S. this war could possibly be over. Out of the 3 million Americans
who have served in this war so far approximately 58,000 of them are dead, over 1,000 are missing in action, and around 150,000
Americans are seriously injured. |
